I have been a father for over a year now (the main reason I have failed to keep this blog updated) and I feel like it's about time for me to impart some wisdom and hopefully give you a few laughs.
I don't claim to be a super-dad or anything like that, but I have received plenty of encouragement that I am doing a better job than a dead-beat dad. My son has given me plenty of opportunities to learn lessions... and hopefully they've stuck with me.
Maybe it's the type of person I am (obsessed with sports), or the constant metaphorical references to aspects of life being like sports or vice versa, but I like to think of parenting as a sport. Parents are athletes. Not in the typical sense but in the way they approach their task. Allow me to demostrate.
- Parenting requires teamwork; trust your teammates and communicate
- Practicing the fundamentals might not be fun, but it's necessary; you need a solid base of skills before you can up your game.
- Practice makes perfect; yes, Allen Iverson, we are talking about practice... man.
- Be prepared every day; have a gameplan.
- Sometimes gameplans fall apart; be flexible and make adjustments on the fly.
- Uniforms get dirty; deal with it.
- It's okay to play zone defense from time to time.
- Don't get flashy, don't show-boat, don't brag; you won't make many friends.
- We don't do it for the money or the accolades; we do it for the love of the game.
- A win is a win is a win; it doesn't have to be perfect.
- Learn all you can from the veterans.
- The sooner you "turn pro" the more pressure their will be to succeed.
- The more effort you put in, the sweeter the rewards will be.
